Semester 1 2021 Wrap Up
To mark the end of semester one 2021, here's a quick wrap-up of what we've achieved so far!
This year kicked off with the Law School's 𝙀𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙧 which was an awesome opportunity to connect with other equity groups and promote our club.
Our 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙇𝙖𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙝 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 was an awesome opportunity to connect with our members, introduce our new executive and kick off our mentoring program. It was great to see over 120 students at the event.
At the beginning of recruitment season, we received feedback from our members that they felt unprepared and confused about the recruitment process. In response to this, we ran a Zoom event providing '𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙬-𝘿𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩'. We were able to draw on the experience of our community and offer insights into recruitment for big, mid-size and small law firms, community law clinics, barristers chambers, big 3 consulting firms, big 4 accounting firms and the public sector. It was awesome to see over 170 law students attend this event!
In the first half of the semester, our Advocacy Officers Heena Gherra & Arshiya Arif organised a 𝘽𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 for our members. Boxing Alley kindly hosted us in their gym and took the attendees through an hour session. The event was a great opportunity to build community among our membership and promote wellness.
In the last week of semester, our Education Officers Harini Meiyappan & Bella Graham organised an 𝙀𝙭𝙖𝙢 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠 for the WIL community. The objective of the week was to encourage students to prioritise their mental and physical wellbeing during a stressful period of time. We ran a social media campaign and organised events at law school during the week including a yoga session , coffee & crafts and destress donuts.
Throughout the semester we have also been running a 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 in support of a team of lawyers looking to bring Aotearoa's first-ever complaint to the United Nations Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. We're proud to have a team made up of members of our executive, sub-committee and broader membership working on this project.
We've also brought back our 𝙈𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢 for a third year. Our Mentoring Officer Huma Shezhad is running the programme of over 100 students, which matches first-year students with older law students, who provide pastoral support, care and advice. We organised a 𝙈𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 in the second half of the semester to give our mentors the opportunity to build their leadership and mentoring skills.
We've also kicked off our 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙨 again this year. We provide a safe and welcoming environment for law students of the same cohort to study together. Our study groups have kai and are supervised by an older student who can provide pastoral care and general university advice. These are organised by Education Officers Harini Meiyappan & Bella Graham.
